Columbia College Apprenticeships

The Columbia College Emergency Medical Services Pre-Apprenticeship is a program designed for students who are interested in the Emergency Medical Services field.  Pre-apprentices in the initiative will complete Columbia College’s Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) courses and receive CPR, EMS and EMT certificates. They will also engage in workshops, field trips, job shadowing, and soft skills education. Those who complete the program will have a clear path to become an apprentice in the Emergency Medical Services field through the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (Cal-JAC).  Columbia College has established a collaborative partnership with Cal-JAC that focuses on preparing EMS pre-apprentices for entry into one of Cal-JAC’s registered apprenticeship programs.

Interested in a career in firefighting? The Fire Science Pre-Apprenticeship is designed to provide an introduction to careers in fire science through hands-on experiences, workshops, field trips, and more. After completing the Pre-Apprenticeship and the  Columbia College Fire Academy , either simultaneously or consecutively, participants will have the opportunity to apply to Cal-JAC , the state's only registered apprenticeship in firefighting.

The Computer Networking Pre-Apprenticeship is a 5-course sequence designed to prepare you for industry standard certification and get you into the workforce within a year . This program is free to students, and will provide hands-on practical training with the equipment businesses are currently using. In addition to the courses, we will have field-trips, workshops, and will provide vouchers to take the industry standard CompTIA  A+, Network+, and Security+ exams.

The Child Development Apprenticeship consists of multiple key components which include:

• Program Duration and Certifications:

  • A 28-month program that culminates in an Associate Teacher Permit.
  • Apprentices will receive a Certificate of Completion as a Registered Childcare Worker through the Division of Apprenticeship Standards (DAS).

• Job Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Apprentices work in various roles such as aides, assistants, or associate teachers.
  • They are placed in settings like infant, toddler, or preschool classrooms, as well as elementary after-school programs.

• Encouragement for Further Education:

  • Apprentices are strongly encouraged to pursue additional coursework.
  • Specifically, they are encouraged to work towards earning an Associate of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education.

This structured approach allows apprentices to gain hands-on experience in diverse educational settings while also obtaining recognized certifications. The Associate Teacher Permit and the Registered Apprentice certificate from the Division of Apprenticeship Standards validate their professional competence and readiness to work in early childhood education.

Furthermore, the emphasis on continuing education through pursuit of an Associate of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education underscores the program's commitment to comprehensive professional development. This not only enhances the apprentices' skills and knowledge but also prepares them for potential career advancement opportunities within the field.

This program will provide a solid foundation for aspiring educators in early childhood education, blending practical experience with educational attainment and certification.

The two-year Forestry and Conservation On-The-Job Training Apprenticeship program focuses on the management and restoration of fire-adapted ecosystems, offering a comprehensive pathway for individuals interested in fire -fuels management and forestry. Here are the key components of the program:

• Certificates Earned:

  • Successful completion of the program results in a Certificate of Achievement in the Management and Restoration of Fire-Adapted Ecosystems.
  • Trainees also receive a Certificate of Completion through the State of California Division of Apprenticeship Standards (DAS) as a Forest  and ConservationTechnician.

• Job Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Trainees are employed as Forest Conservation Technicians with our employer partners. This role typically involves tasks related to forest management, ecosystem restoration, and conservation efforts focused on fire-adapted ecosystems.

• Opportunity for Further Education:

  • Trainees are given the opportunity to pursue additional coursework.
  • Specifically, they can work towards earning an Associate of Science Degree. This additional education can provide a deeper understanding of ecological principles, forestry practices, and management strategies.

The program structure is designed to equip trainees with both practical skills and recognized credentials. The Certificate of Achievement signifies proficiency in managing and restoring fire-adapted ecosystems, while the Certificate of Completion from the Division of Apprenticeship Standards validates their completion of apprenticeship requirements.

The Hospitality Management Apprenticeship program provides a structured pathway for individuals aspiring towards careers in hospitality. This program will provide a comprehensive blend of academic instruction and practical competency training tailored to the hospitality sector's demands. It prepares apprentices for success in supervisory and management roles while earning recognized certificates that enhance their professional credentials.

Key components include:

• Certificates Earned:

  • Successful completion of the program leads to a Certificate of Achievement in Hospitality Supervision.
  • Apprentices also receive a Certificate of Completion from the State of California, Division of Apprenticeship Standards (DAS). This certificate acknowledges their completion of the apprenticeship program's requirements.

• Emphasis Areas:

  • The program offers three emphasis areas within Hospitality Management. These could include specific focuses such as hotel management, restaurant management, event planning, or other related fields within the hospitality industry.

• On-the-Job Training:

  • Apprentices are connected with an employer partner for paid on-the-job training. This aspect is crucial as it allows apprentices to apply the competency skills they learn in the classroom and lab settings to real-world hospitality environments.
  • The on-the-job training provides practical experience and reinforces theoretical knowledge, preparing apprentices for the challenges and demands of the hospitality industry.
